5. Using Bathing Machines

Nowadays the beach is a lot of fun. Get in your swimsuit and go get a tan, or swim, or whatever you like. However, back before the 20th century this was not the case. Women had to bathe fully dressed in special swim clothing that would cover the entire body. Bathing machines were used to allow a lady to be driven all the way to the water where she could swim for a bit unseen by anyone before retreating back into “hiding” behind the drapes.

6. Bloodletting

Nowadays we use antibiotics, precise surgery, magnetic resonance imaging, and so on, in order to diagnose and treat disease. But back before the 20th century doctors had a different approach to curing people. They believed in a practice called bloodletting (draining the blood of a sick person). It is not surprising that this practice actually left the patients in a much worse state than when they arrived.
