The microscopic world is simply amazing. Recently, Nikon has published the winners of their contest, “Nikon Small World”. The contest aims to award the best pictures of the unseen microscopic world that is all around us. Using light microscopes, the pictures you are about to see are simply out of this world! Here are 20 of the most fascinating pictures that surfaced in the contest!

 

1. Jumping Spider

This picture was taken by Emre Can Alagoz from Istambul. It looks like some other worldly creature. We are a bit surprised it did not make it to top 20, because this photo looks simply amazing. We decided to start off our gallery with this one because it was our favorite.

2. A Keratinocyte

Some of the most awesome pictures came from (you’ll never guess): our own body. The winner is a picture of a kerationocyte, aka a skin cell with fluorescent keratin. Credit for the photo goes to Dr. Bram van den Broek, Andriy Vollov, Dr. Kees Jalink, Dr. Reinhard Windoffer, and Dr. Nicole Schwarz. They won the first prize.

3. Strange Looking Organism?

Well, not exactly. This is a microscopic look at the seed head of a flowering plant taken by Doctor Havi Sarfaly.
