This Metro Entrance In Germany Looks Like A Tram Car Got Smashed Into The Sidewalk Pavement

If you take a walk in Frankfurt Germany, around the city center, there is a high chance you will bump into this mindbending scene. Looking like the aftermath of a fight from a superhero movie, you will come upon a life-sized tram cart smashed into the pavement of the street and half-buried into the concrete. Just as if Superman had picked it up and threw it at his arch-nemesis in an unreal and epic battle.

The mind-bending tram in the pavement, however, is in actuality a very creative architectural structure: a metro entrance to one of Frankfurt’s stations, the Brockenheimer Warte subway station.

The man who came up with this intriguing design is the architect Zbigniew Peter Pininski. The metro station itself was built in 1986, as part of an ongoing effort of the city to expand its subway infrastructure.

Back then, there was a lot of local unrest among the locals of the city, who were opposing the idea of the active expansion and building of the new infrastructure. Change is always difficult to accept, and the opinions were unfavorable.

Inspired by the surrealistic creations of the Belgian artist Rene Magritte, Peter Pininski came up with the idea to shape the entrance to the new metro station differently, giving it a bizarre and eerie look. He hoped that this particular design of the tram car smashed in the pavement would bring a positive light and perspective towards the new metro station, and that people would find it interesting or amusing.

And it worked. Spirits were lifted and the metro station entrance became a focal point of interest in the city of Frankfurt. Today, tourists from all over the world that visit the city, would not miss the opportunity to take a picture with the half-buried tram car entrance.

In 2001, the subway station underwent extensive renovations to be modernized. However, being a consecrated attraction and sight to see, the peculiar entrance was not touched in any way and will stay preserved like this for decades to come, delighting locals, or foreign visitors in the area!
