Old Newspapers Transform Into Lifelike Creatures: The Art Of Chie Hitotsuyama
Contemporary artists are taking on the challenge of reducing waste by incorporating recycled materials into their artworks. From sculptures made from recycled CDs to beautiful sculptures made of old steel wires collected from junk yards, the creative community is embracing the use of sustainable materials in their craft.
One such artist who is making waves in this arena is Chie Hitotsuyama, a paper artist from Japan who creates realistic animal sculptures from old newspapers. Her unique method starts with gathering old newspapers at her studio. She then cuts the paper into strips, wets them to make them limp, twists and rolls them into a string-like material, and finally, binds and forms the paper strings to construct her intricate final sculptures.
Hitotsuyama uses different thicknesses and contours of paper to achieve the desired form and even incorporates the colored prints from the newspaper to bring color variations to her sculptures. As an animal lover, most of her sculptures focus on her favorite subject – animals. Each piece is crafted with intricate detail and a naturalistic stance, making the sculptures appear almost lifelike and in motion.
Hitotsuyama’s unique and impressive sculptures showcase the potential of recycled materials and demonstrate her wonderfully creative and technical abilities. Check them out below:
