People’s Eyelashes Freeze And A Thermometer Simply Breaks As Siberian Village Records -62°C (-82°F)
When the heat waves of summer keep you up at night in a pool of sweat think of Oymyakon – a Siberian village that has just recorded a numbing temperature of -62°C (-82°F).
Oymyakon is the second coldest place in the world, right after your ex’s heart. It is a permanently inhabited settlement in Northern Russia where 500 locals experience long, freezing winters every year. After living there for generations, for them, any temperature under -30°C (-22°F) is just a regular Tuesday.
The place where your eyelashes freeze and your saliva transform into tiny icicles that spear your lips used to be a stopover for reindeer herders in the 1920s. Back then, people would make a quick stop to water their animals, take a dip in the nearby thermal springs and move on.
The Soviet authorities, however, deemed the place as perfectly habitable, so they forced the people to stay around a little longer.
Almost a century later, their descendants are still there, and if you don’t consider the glacial temperatures that they have to endure, it looks as if they were living in a winter wonderland.
