Soldier Rescued This Holocaust Survivor And Ended Up Spending 70 Beautiful Years Together With Her
This story could also be called “True love can be found even in the darkest of times”.
The year 1944 was decisive for this couple. Edith Steiner was saved from Auschwitz by 23 years old John Mackay and they have spent the rest of their lives together, but they never planned to.
John was a part of the unit that helped set free Edith from the Jewish Holocaust concentration camps. Edith faced execution and was present at the camp at the same time as Josef Mengele, also known as The Angel of Death, because of his sadistic experiments. Edith, who was born in Hungary, lost not less than 39 family members during the Holocaust.
At a dance, Edith decided that she would take John’s invitation to dance, only if it came from him, and so he had to work up the courage to ask her. And that’s when their love story began. The two have been married for more than 70 years. Who would have thought that love can overgrow even the darkest of times?

4. To celebrate the liberation, there a dance night was organized, and John, being shy, asked a friend to ask Edith if she’d dance with him

5. She said she would only accept to dance with John, if he invited her to dance, himself.

6. And so, John mustered the courage to ask her for a dance!
